Second visit to the farm

Second visit to the farm

Yesterday Randy and I went to visit the farm for the second time since we closed on the property.  With our busy schedules including the GrowMemphis booth at the Cooper-Young Community Farmers Market on Saturdays, Sunday is really the only day we can get up there.

The alarm went off at 3:00 am and we were on the road by 4:00 am.  It was a beautiful drive out.  Mist hung over the road and the air cooled dramatically once we were beyond the city.  We were there before sunrise and the songbirds were calling out in the pre-dawn light.

Our major task was clearing the area where the driveway will go and through which the trailer we are to live in will be brought it.  We had to cut down several small trees, including a few eastern red cedars which will make lovely posts.

At 6:00 am Wayne Wilson, the nephew of the woman who sold us the land to us, came by to talk about tractor work.  He plans to bush hog the approximately two acres in the north west corner where the trailer, outbuildings, and first garden beds will go.

At about 8:30 the well guy pulled up.  It was already hot, the cool of morning long since over.  We went out to the big field to talk about where the well should go.  The biggest issue is getting power to the well site.  We went out to the high point of the field, which is conveniently centrally located.  Our homework is figuring exactly how much well we need, or think we will need in the future, and contacting the power company about the electricity.

It took us until about 10:30 to finish clearing the spot for the driveway, including removing the fence.  By then I was bathed in sweat and red-faced.  We rolled out shortly after that, hot and tired, but happy.
